In 2005-06, hosiery fabrics constituted around 21 % of total cloth production in India. Chemical processing, being the last process in textile manufacture, can make or mar the final product. Hence, processing of knitted fabrics is a critical aspect of our export of knits. Although, chemical processing has been a weak link in Indian textile manufacturing, in recent years it is gratifying to note that a few modern process houses have come up lately and are processing knits.

Chemical processing has traditionally been a very strong point of BTRA activities. This exposure coupled with the vast experience on fabric defect analysis, has lead us to accumulate various types of information on knit goods processing and present it in the form of a book.

The topics covered in this publication are as follows – introduction, processing of knitted fabric, machinery developments in knitting, processing of yarn packages for knitting, processing of fabric containing elastane, finishing of knitted fabric and defects in knitted fabric [with photographs highlighting defects]. Also, website addresses of machinery manufacturers for processing knitted fabrics and guidelines for knit garments testing [test methods to follow] are included in this publication.
