Geocells

Geocells are three dimensional honeycomb structure made by expanding parallel layers of welded polymeric strips. These are textured or perforated cellular mattress in which soil can be filled. Thus the movement of the soil confines to the cell of the structure, thereby known as Cellular Confinement Systems. This system improves the structural and functional behavior of soils and aggregate infill materials. These structures help in distributing loads over a wider area. These are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyester or another polymer material. This creates a free-draining system that holds infill materials in place and prevents mass movements by providing confinement through tensile reinforcement.
The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA), a pioneer textile research institute over the 65+ years, was established in 1954 by Govt. of India along with the industry association to boost research, conducting testing, consultancy and certification in the field of textile, polymers, fibers and other materials.
Following are the tests done at BTRA for geocell

  • Weld strength [ISO 13426 / BTRA developed method]
  • Cell dimensions
  • Entire section dimensions
  • Cell height
  • Cell wall Thickness
